Over the last two decades there has
been a growing awareness of the environment issues
involving the oil and gas industry. Today waste
generation, handling and disposal are high on the
regulatory priority list. With the increased exposure to
the public eye, oil companies are becoming ever more
sensitive of the need for waste management to minimize
the environment impact.
No oil and gas wells can drilled
without creating waste, however with current technology
and through the implementation of good management
practices, in most cases the amount of waste that is
generated can be significantly reduced from the level
encountered today.
Waste management theory is based upon
a series of sequential management practices designed to
prevent environmental pollution. This is commonly
refered to as “waste management hierarchy” which consists of:
-
Reduction at source
-
Recycling
-
Treatment
-
Disposal
